Balakrishna Shetty - Bahrain Ambassador
Written by BuntsWorld Admin

A Man of Diplomacy, Dignity and Distinction
Meet the New Indian Ambassador to Bahrain

Representing India as ambassador in any country of the world is the greatest honour. When one of our own men receives this honor, then the entire native territory should feel  proud of the achiever. Yes, 55-year-old Kundapur-born Balakrishna Shetty has made not only the Bunt community proud, but the entire Mangalorean community around the globe as well.

Balakrishna Shetty

Balakrishna Shetty has recently taken over as the new ambassador for India in the Kingdom of Bahrain. He is the very first Kannadiga to occupy the prestigious post of ambassador in Bahrain.

A simple personality with extensive experience and knowledge, Shetty is committed to the service of the Indian community. He is well versed with multiple facets of the domain of public service. He is also a prolific orator and has shown dedication to social and cultural values.

"I am a very modest man and I do not have many abilities," is how Shetty describes himself. In a manner of speaking, it is far from the truth because when he says so, he is only trying to be modest. When he speaks, there is an immense concentration of enthusiasm and energy in every word.

"A large chunk of my work will revolve around the welfare of the Indian community here, as well as strengthening our good relationship with Bahrain." He is a multi-talented man, with varied interests; he speaks of cricket with a total grip over the subject and passion; he is a mathematician and a chronic optimist. He is  computer-savvy and multilingual; and he is absolutely clear and focused as to the scope of his new assignment.

Sadananda Shetty's family hailed from a rural family.  His father, Late Sri. Babu Shetty, opted to serve the Government and thereby the public.   He successfully concluded his great community service and service to his society by being a  retired Thashildar.  His service to the society was impeccable.

Sadananda Shetty was born in Udupi on 20th Sept 1942, when the freedom struggle was entering the decisive phase and life was a never - ending struggle for a common man.  Fighting against all odds, he completed his education in Mangalore.  After completing his education he was attracted towards business field. The Bunts of Tulu Nadu
Written by BuntsWorld Admin

The Bunts of Tulu Nadu

The word Bunta in Tulu language implies a powerful man or a soldier.  The community of Bunts (anglicized from Buntas), also referred to as Nadavas, form an important and integral part of the socio economic culture of Tulu nadu, in coastal Karnataka.  They share Tulu nadu with other prominent ethnic groups like the Billavas, Mogeras, Brahmins, Konkanis, Catholics and Jains.  As a community, Bunts are next in number only to the Billavas of Tulu nadu.  They are reputed to be agriculturists par excellence.  Bunts are part of a group called Nadavas, who mainly reside in the northern part of Tulu nadu.  They are thought to have had a common origin and culture as the Nayars of Malabar and Nattars of Tamil Nadu.  As the name Nadava implies, originating from the word nadu or territory, the Bunts are owners of land.  The Bunts of southern Tulu nadu speak Tulu language, a form of language that is used in commerce in the region, called Common Tulu.

E. Thurston wrote in his Castes and Tribes of Southern India (1955-56), “This is a caste of Kanarese farmers found only in South Kanara.  The Nadavas have retained four sub-divisions*, one of the most important being Masadi….  I have no information regarding the caste but they seem to be closely allied to the Bunt caste of which Nadava is one of the sub-divisions.  The name Nadava or Nadavaru means people of the nadu or country….  They still retain their independence or character, their strong well developed physique, and still carry their heads with some haughty toss as their fore-fathers did, in the stirring fighting days, when as an old proverb had it ‘the slain rested in the yard of the slayer’, and when every warrior constantly carried his sword and shield.  Both men and women of the Bunt community are among the comeliest of Asiatic races.”

*Masadi (masadika) is the most common Tulu speaking sub-division of Bunts in Southern Tulu nadu.  Nadavas are Kannada speaking people that live in Northern Tulu nadu from Brahmavar to Baindoor.  Parivara Bunts also live in the northern parts and follow some of the Brahmin customs.  Jain Bunts are those who converted to Jainism during the reign of various Jain rulers, especially Hoysalas.
